I have advanced degree and decade of experience, and didn't even get past the first round of temp holiday retail jobs :/ I know, I shouldn't assume I'm qualified (I do not have retail experience) but just sharing that he's not along in having a tough time right now...

What industry? Location?

Advertising/marketing, DMV area

You’re too picky if you “can’t find workers” to do ad/mkt

He has severance for now but will end soon. Have emergency savings to last awhile, but cannot afford our mortgage for more than a year on single income and will really burn savings in the process. We have two kids. I am just being positive and encouraging with my spouse, but privately, I worry. I know he does too.

Suggestions, words of wisdom?

A lot of resumes are being filtered by AI, so any tips he can get on that front would be helpful.

Apply far and wide and to locations that are not ideal and in office. The job market is bad everywhere and it’s worse in the DMV area right now, so pickiness will not help. Can he do contract work? What about your connections, OP?

We could manage the mortgage at 85k though it would be hard to stay at that salary for a long time as we not save much- also factoring in that we did not need to pay for before or aftercare for our kids as his prior job was very flexible, and we may need to depending on what job he may find. I am going to need a new car in the next couple of years so have to think about that too.

He was making around 150k previously. Thankfully I am still employed and already carried our health insurance.

Only two months? Settle in, it’s going to be a while. Do you work, OP?

You should sell your house now. It’s just going to get worse all around. My friend was laid off a full year and he’s in NY banking, which is way better than DMV.

Spouse was breadwinner and laid off two months ago. Spends time every morning job hunting, applying. Two first round interviews and nothing further. He has contacted every networking contact he can think of.
