The pampering of children continues. What happens when they get a job offer in Chicago? I guess staying in the DC area and being unemployed is more desirable.

When our DD was 10, she declared that she disliked Boston while we were visiting her aunt (and she does like her aunt). When we were college visiting, she was excited to visit Boston area schools. We were there an hour and then she said, "you know what, I remember now that I don't like Boston." Ha. She found it too big of a city.

No, there are too many excellent cold weather schools to just cross off like that. They would be silly.

We had the opposite; our kid only wanted cold. She had a very specific "wish list" and cutting out schools in the south or the west made her list very small. We made her look at one school in the south and one in the west to give her more options. She loved the school in the west and was OK that it didn't have four seasons. Could not do the south. In the end, she ended up in an extremely cold place as she wanted, but at least she was able to expand her horizons by looking at a few additional places.

She didn’t wind up there, but my daughter fell in love with 2 schools in MI - one was Northern MI, of all places!

The farthest south she applied was VA. There were reasons.

She ultimately chose a school in MA.

For DC it’s less about cold and more about whether the place is gray and rainy for a significant period. U Rochester would be very appealing but the weather is not, for example. DC needs regular sunlight.

And no, I would not force my kid to apply anywhere they didn’t want to be, whatever the reason. They aren’t going to be successful if they are miserable. There are thousands of colleges, why force anything?

Mine applied to two in cold weather states but was actively voting against them the entire time. In CA now.

Yes. My kid refuses to apply to cold weather schools. Has no interest.

Why would you force that?

Mine will next year, and no, despite not being happy about it I won’t make them.
