Other than that - great school spirit, fun college town, friendly people. Winter is tough and long though sunnier than the northeast schools. Drinking/partying is also a big deal.

Finally, keep in mind travel and network. Wisconsin people are all over but mostly midwest. And direct flights to DMV are not as frequent as places like Chicago, Boston, Miami, Charlotte, or wherever else.

I was told that Madison really isn't a college town. It is more of an urban school.

LOL - Madison is THE college town. It is also the state capital so there is more going on than just UW (which is a plus in my opinion)

Not Columbia/UPenn urban. Not Rice urban either. More like Ohio State urban - not among the skyscrapers, but not hiding in a suburb.

DD MechE major waitlisted at UMich is there now and enjoying the work-hard/play-hard environment. Gorgeous campus. Flights in and out of DCA are easy and a 15 min Uber ride to campus from the airport. Haven’t experienced the winter yet, but she’ll be home most of January. So far, classes have been review of high school. We hear that second semester, Statics is supposed to be a hard one and maybe weed some out. We’ll see.

Madison has 3 direct flights to DCA; 2x daily on American, 1x on Delta. There are not as many flights from those big cities, but it is also not a terrible selection and unlike those big cities, it is an easy airport to get to from campus - 15 minutes maybe, and the easiest airport to get around in. I love the MSN-DCA flight - less than 2 hours, both smallish, easy to navigate airports. It may not be the least expensive option though.

It's a popular school choice at our New England public. Seems to attract kids who are smart and want a rah rah experience but don't want to go South to some big SEC school.

You have to want a big school to succeed there. I've heard the business and other sought after clubs are competitive. Also, the out of staters I know are all involved in the Greek system.

Definitely a good back up plan to the Top 5 or so Engineering schools.

My child is a junior STEm major at UW–Madison. Students have two choices to get in and out of Madison: either fly out of MSN their small Dane County airport with limited choices, or take Van Galder bus for 2.5 hours to O'Hare to fly out. Not the most convenient, but it's okay if you do that just a few times a year.

I'm not great at math but is #29 second to none? lol

Madison is great. The professors have been interested and invested in my kid’s success. My kid is not a partier and has still been happy there. Part of the campus is urban, part is traditional.

It attracts many of the best students in state and in Minnesota. For OOS, it’s often back up plan for a lot of kids who want Michigan, but are part of the 90% that don’t get in. SO much cheaper though and in hindsight kid thinks Michigan would not have been worth the extra cost.

It’s a great all around school but STEM is especially strong.

Please. Wisconsin is very good at engineering, but it’s not a top 5 program like Georgia Tech.

Considering Engineering major here.

Would love to hear any first hand experience - academics? Internships, weather? is madison as fun a college town as they say?
