WVU is like $45K for oos. Penn state is $60K for oos.

DC wants to major in some STEM major that our in state public doesn't have but both of the other schools do.

We could do Penn state, but it would basically wipe out DC's small inheritance. We can easily afford WVU, but we'd have to wipe out DC's inheritance for Penn State, which they said they would be ok with. DC prefers Penn State over WVU.

I'm thinking Penn state is a better choice long term because of the stronger alumni network, and also if DC decides to change their major, which IMO there is a high probability, Penn State would be better. But, I'm not 100% sure if Penn State is worth it over WVU for that price difference.

WDYT?

I’m a WVU grad but I’d pick PSU in this situation. It’s a great school STEM and has a great alumni network.

This is probably true, but Penn State is a much more valuable degree in the long run. Good gravy is that a strong alumni network. It’s like a cult. Plus State College is a far more appealing place to spend four years than Morgantown.

Easy Penn State.

1. New laws in West VA for your DD not a good thing.
2. Penn State is one of the largest networks for jobs
3. Internships way better at Penn State
4. Matriculation in the Engineering school make sure at Penn state she is entering into the college of engineering as a freshman and does not have to matriculate in.

Have her also look at the courses required to graduate in her major choice make sure she wants to take those required. '

$60K isn’t crazy. Penn State is a lot better school. I’d go there.

DEFINITELY Penn State. It's a much stronger research university with a much much more powerful alumni network.

WVU has MAJOR money and administrative problems; they are cutting majors and faculty and people who work there are trying to leave if they can.

$60K is a lot, but in this case, if kid knows about it and wants Penn State, I'd let the kid choose.

Inheritance, like from a grandparent? I would let DC choose but also explain that $60k invested now ($15k x 4 years) would likely be a sizeable home downpayment when they are 30. Just something to consider.
