It’s sad all around for all the dogs in shelters.
What should be banned outright are puppy mills and breeding for profit.

Woah. I agree with everything but your last sentence. ONLY breeders should be allowed. Dogs aren’t nature vs nurture. They have very firm natures and people need working and service dogs that are bred that way. Even companion dogs should come from breeders too. Grandma doesn’t need a pit mix to cuddle with.

We need mandatory spay and neuter laws unless you have a license. And there should be fines and penalties.

NP. I agree with you re: mandatory spay/neuter, but most people breeding purebreds for show, service dogs, etc are not clearing much of a profit, if any. It's a hobby that might pay for itself most years.
People breeding high volume as a commercial enterprise are a problem and should be banned.

My aunt lives in Georgia and they have packs of wild dogs that roam the streets. Completely feral and dog attacks are common. My aunt took long walks daily her entire life and now cannot. There is no animal care and control there and the county dgaf

Most of the dogs at the rescue I volunteered with came from the southern US. I think they view it as their mission to save as many as they can from euthanasia.

Our rescue has a limit of dogs they can accept, however, so if they reach that limit, it means no more loaded vans of dogs from the south.

So I'm not sure that I get your rant, OP.

I'm fine with immigrants of any species.

Well, it's just what it is. I am fostering for the org that pulls dog from the South, a lot of hounds, shepherds, pitts. Several times I thought about fostering for local dogs only to find out local shelters prefer to keep adoptable animals in their facilities, and foster out special needs - puppies, sick, large breeds (almost all pitbulls).
I've already have a large dog and cats, so I'm picky about what dog I can bring in (and large pitts I've met are not good with cats - generalization, I know but that's my experience with adult pitties; puppies are fine, have one right now snoozing next to one of my cats).
So my choice is - young pups from the South, and I'd probably adopt one someday.

The soft hearted people who run and support rescue organizations have a very difficult time giving up on any animal. They’ll raise thousands of dollars for lifesaving surgery to remove a tumor from a disabled dog who is already 2/3 of the way through its expected lifespan, even though that money could save 6-10 younger, healthier dogs. The more heartbreaking and miserable the dog’s life has been, the greater the lengths they’ll go to in order to save it. Sometimes their decision making is based more on emotion than steely logic. They’re the counterweights to the people who dgaf about animals and treat them like disposable objects, without a second thought.

This is what I’m talking about. We are in the DC area and our shelters are full and the shelters are euthanizing dogs. And when I say the shelters are full, I mean other than Pitbulls. There is a wide variety of dog breeds available. But we keep bringing more dogs in just for more dogs to be surrendered.

I think it's more of an inbalance of values, SES and ignorance. Huge generalizations coming, but our rescue dog is from MS or somewhere.

The south has people who don't spay and neuter pets, have (or try to have) more working pets. When I say that, I mean hounds, etc. that they don't spay/neuter, train.

They end up in overstuffed southern kill shelters and everyone tries to save them from the kill shelters to the non kill ones up north.

I don't have any insight to Pitt Bulls and Pitt Bull mixes. That seems to be a northern problem and they are not fixed for stupid macho reasons. Again, sorry for the gross generalizations. Maybe someone can correct me or articulate the nuances better.

Because you think rescues are some sort of inherently benevolent and altruistic organizations. They’re businesses.

I recognize this is an irrational vent and irrational pet peeve.

Why do local “rescue” groups continue to import dogs from other states when the shelters in the local DC area are overflowing, full, and people are currently surrendering their own pets?!

Almost every day I see pleas emergency fosters, dogs that haven’t been adopted out, for emergency help, all for dogs imported from other states.

Sorry, this is just a vent. I am well aware I am in the minority, but it makes me so upset that all of these dogs are in our shelters and people just keep bringing more dogs in.
