Had daughter and son go through Hughes, didn’t have any issues, both took AA classes and both did band. All of their teachers were incredible, especially the band director, she is amazing. As well as orchestra and choir, I have good nothing but great things. The AA/Honors classes seem to have kids who actually want to learn and not cause trouble.

*sorry live, not love. I am PP. Bottom line I am anxious the whole time when I'm there, worried for kids safety and mine. Choose Carson, Thoreau, Longfellow, Robinson...not Hughes.

I am a substitute teacher and will not sub there, even though I love close.. Some nice classes but more where students clearly are not used to listening to adults, doing work, following social norms. Cannot follow basic instructions, constantly talking and walking around....makes you wonder how it is when teacher is there, why basic rules are not established. Admin never comes to check in when I'm subbing, front office doesn't answer phone, and even getting a next-door teacher to help is tough..

One word: ghetto.

What are the general pros and cons for 1 sporty kid 1 artsy kid. They’d both be going in not knowing anyone. Are the parents and kids cliquey? Is it easy to meet people? Just trying to get more insight than the rating.

Interesting. How would it be for kids who are athletes, very into soccer? (Not music/performing arts)

Have had OK experiences with both of my kids, one there now and one in HS. Some phenomenal teachers, great after school program, nice renovated building. My son says the new principal yells ALL the time and I actually have seen that too. I have a friend who works there and she says discipline has improved but it's a stressful environment for kids and teachers. Locked doors, hall sweeps, teachers encouraged to keep classes quiet and contained at all costs. Admin seems more like a SWAT team than like educators.

No complaints! Much prefer to the elem experience we had.

Teachers seem to care, grades are entered quickly, they respond to email. Teachers are available after school for support. Quite a robust after school, sports program. Something for every kids interest.

Will also echo band/music/chorus program is amazing.

The new principal seems engaged and building a student community.

DP. I found them to be unfriendly. I never had any real lengthy interactions with them, but the times I did go to pick up DS they just acted like I was inconveniencing them for showing up. How dare I!

Everyone I know who sends their kids there likes it. It's just people who don't live there that will tell you it's a bad school because OMG it's diverse.

OP. You will not get honest answers here. I have friends whose kids have gone there. They had no complaints.

If you ask more specific questions, you might get better answers.
