The truth is in the Net Price Calculator. Use it if you really want to know. As PPs noted, tuition does not include room, board, fees. And assets are considered.

I’m the OP. I am not affiliated with the school. My kids don’t go there, and sadly, we can’t afford it so my kids won’t apply. I shared this because I thought it was great news for some families. Because it said “income” I didn’t realize it included your assets too. Bummer.

They have to consider assets. I have a high school junior and technically my DH and I could retire to get our income under this threshold to qualify for this benefit. But we have plenty of assets.

Also, merit-based full rides have always been just for tuition and not room and board. Not sure why this would be different.

And they require you to have "typical assets" which usually does not allow for a DMV area house.

+1 The "typical assets" is what makes many people ineligible despite a HHI under the threshold.

You pay for those if you don’t qualify for aid that meets all need.

Tuition is 73K, while room and board is less than 20K.

If you live in dmv, 120k HHI is low for family with college age kids, you would be bottom 30% for you demographic.

Actually it does include a house in the DMV but may not be in the area you want. Why should someone saving, living a more basic lifestyle and a cheaper house get less aid, and you get more?

Agreed! I’m suspicious of these parents commenting on these threads about their inability to receive aid because of their assets. Our family HHI is ~$120k, we couldn’t afford a $1m+ home if we tried.

Colgate is a damn good choice if you're like most kids and want a Wall Street career.

If you put your money into a huge house and did not save any for college that is on you. -DMV, $4000 monthly mortgage and still paid for private k-12 and an ivy on what DCUM considers “middle class”. It just takes planning.
