Probably to weed out applicants who don't want to bother writing them.

Agree that essay 2 is important and needs to be specific to Michigan. If it's LSA say something about the specific major and why that major at UM stands out.

I am bummed because my kid is not going to be applying because they don't have the time to write these essays this weekend, along with finalizing three other EA apps. Good luck to all of the other parents out here with super motivated kids (not sarcastic - just the truth).

That may be exactly what UM (and other schools who require supplemental essays) are looking for. If UM is 4th priority of just his EA applications, he probably wasn't going to attend if accepted.

100% - basically, a cusp decision can be moved to Yes from this essay (per Michigan AO).

The leader essay is normal length.
The Why Mich essay is shorter than the Wisconsin one.

You want a serious essay situation, look at Schreyer at Penn State.

Schreyer is insane. NINE essays!? If the goal is to weed out the unserious I think it will work on my kid.

Same for my kid too. Penn State is a good safety but those essays are just too much. So my kid apply to Penn State without the Schreyer part.

The William and Mary / St Andrews essay is between 1500 and 2000 words!

Revist essay 1 once essay 2 is done. Essay 2 is the the most important writing piece your kid will submit to UMich. If essay 1 still stands on its own, keep it. If it is repetitive or seems weak in comparison, change it.

Also, specific is really important. Try to get them to add more of that, however they can.

I think so. It's fine if they reinforce each other, especially when it comes to their area of study and future goals.

Just make sure the surrounding context and language isn't the exact same and you should be fine.

My DC is looking for feedback.

Can they lightly mention an item in essay one that is a theme in essay two?

Essay 1 = leadership and citizens who challenge present and enrich future

Essay 2 = Why that school within Michigan

They are steering clear - but when I read essay #1, it felt too generic without calling out the specifics of what their future goal was.

Appreciate any guidance
