If you make your "thing" your whole personality that's a problem too. Like a woman who had long hair and always talked about her hair, what she ate to keep her hair healthy, other people's hair, people's lack of hair, what products people should use, probably used, just hair. All the time.

For men, I would say control issues stemming from insecurity. Control issues many be hidden behind manipulation (appearing and disappearing intentionally, playing games to get your attention); extremely transactional (either seeks 50/50 bins counting, are cheap, or the opposite, tries to control you with money); extremely jealous; wants exclusivity right away etc.

Mental illness. Often extremely mentally ill people can go a long time unchecked because they are very attractive.

Most recent date was typical of what I sometimes hear from other single friends - clearly stuck on ex. He did not bring her up but I asked. In this guy's case it was an ex-wife rather than gf and he mentioned some interactions that obviously made him upset or sad. Otherwise, a terrific guy but no thanks.
I mean … you literally asked. You would probably complain if he didn’t share anything, too.
