Most Southerners don't call it this. Though the fact that any of them do is pretty gross. But I know plenty of people from the Carolinas, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana (including a bunch of black folks) and none of them call it the War of Norther Aggression. But then they aren't racist, so that's probably why.

It's all about traditions, style, food and attitude. I'm not from the South, but my MIL is southern (Texas/New Orleans) so I'm just guessing - but love the energy!

This. So many regions are like this. It's actually more interesting to talk about which regions tend to produce people who are more neutral about their region or more chill about the idea that other areas might also be good. Like: the Pacific Northwest, the Southwest and Mountain West (excluding California), Florida (they know we all laugh at them and most of them understand why). All of those places actually have really great stuff in them, so its interesting you never hear someone going on and on about how they are from the BEST place even if that place is, like, Colorado, which is actually legitimately really great!

Some people definitely feel it is their identity. Just like some New Yorkers (NYC), Californians, etc.

Most of the aristrocratic English, Scots, Welsh settled there.
Is why tea, sweet 16's, big outdoor parties, horse races, brunch and sunday dinner, gowns and dresses, English style horsemanship, etc. are still huge there.

I don’t know of any other US region where people are so infatuated with their location, wallowing in it endlessly and holding it up as the best place to be from.
