Another person in these shoes, and I agree a topper sounds better suited (watch Jean Smart in Hacks and/or Jane Fonda in Grace&Frankie to see how natural a topper can look).

For those on oral minoxidil, what are the common side effects?

Not discouraging the extensions or a topper. Looking to ongoing health. Your body is responding to something.

It's way cheaper and just as good to order a wig online. Wigoutlet/wigs.com has amazing selection and return policy. Never had any issues. Check out Jon Renau brand and Estetica for good quality synthetic wigs. You want to look for a lace front or an entirely handtied lace cap for the best movement. Bonus with the synthetic is you'll never have to faff with restyling the hair...the style is set into the fibers with heat. You can wash and hang them to dry and they will look as good as new.

Why are they refusing to prescribe?

Are there good places to buy or try a topper locally? Peri is doing a number on my hair and would like to try one before purchasing.

My derm will not prescribe oral minoxidil for me! I have asked and asked. I don't want to insist because she is the medical professional, but I really want it. I use a minoxidil compound now and it has helped a little but I hear so much about how oral use gets such great results.

From what I have read, you would be better off getting a hair topper as the extensions will create tension and cause more hair to fall out.

FWIW I went to a dermatologist who put me on low dose oral minoxidil (also losing hair due to weight loss). It has only been a few days, so I obviously haven't seen any results.

I have fine hair and have tried all kinds of extensions. I love the way they look at first but always damage my hair. Nutrafol has helped and I use clip ins for special events! I have heard great things about the halo extensions

I second the topper comment. My friend, who has chin length hair, uses a topper and it looked great!

I have thinning hair and like the nioxin shampoo & conditioner and olaplex volume spray (fantastic product!). If I’m self conscious about having pics taken and the hairline, I use Madison Reed’s powder for the hairline

A hair topper would be far better, or even a wig. Extensions can quickly damage thinning hair and if you are 40+, it might not recover.

Be careful with hair extensions as they can badly break the hair you have. Unless you plan on using them forever you will eventually take them out and be in a worse spot than you are in now.

Ask your doctor to prescribe oral minoxidil (the ingredient in Rogaine) as that won't make your hair dirty.

What type of hair do you have, OP?

I've never really wanted to spend extra time and money on hair extensions but my hair has been thinning for a while and after losing 35 lbs, my hair is really falling out.
I'd like to get some extensions to make it look thicker (not longer). My hair stylist gave me clip in ones but I don't think they look great.

I'm going to see a dermatologist to try and minimize further hair loss. I cannot use Rogaine - makes my hair look dirty.
But does anyone have a recommendation for extensions for now?
Montgomery County preferred. I'm in Bethesda.
