If a kid is getting an "N", I've already communicated home about behaviors or recorded missing assignments in SIS.

I was surprised to learn it was new for some middle schools though. When I taught middle school it was always required.

Are you saying 2 minutes to complete for 150 students? Still 2 minutes too much, still worthless and doesn’t count the additional time to answer the questions the scoring will likely prompt from students and teachers.

This is a ridiculous thing added to our to-do list that doesn't actually provide any new information to parents

Clicking another button on their automated report card is going to be REALLY HARD!

You have taught 3 full weeks of classes in the first quarter? 5?

Horrible if teachers didn’t know about this since first day of school.

If the goal is to get everyone an IEP, this is the way to do it.

This is something I think neither parents or teachers want or need and someone (School Board? Gatehouse?) had a thought and it went unchecked. So much better way to spend time and opens doors for more parents arguing with teachers and more work for teachers…. See only downside here.

+1. What a terrible idea. Everyone knows that these scores will just make families demand more services from the school. Students aren't actually going to change habits themselves!!

The comments on report cards are stupid.

Student could test well and do well on tests whether or not study or cram all at last minute for tests and get 100 in summatives, but screw around and not turn in bunch of assignments and get say 75 in formative side- will still get A when do 70/30 calculation.

On other end, if student has C for grade and top score for effort and turning in assignments, is that confirmation the student can’t do any better because they gave it their best effort already?

Who had this idea and how did it make its way through to actually be done?

Below from FCPS announcements that went out today. New “Work Habits” scores that will now be on final transcripts but will be on quarterly report cards to give “feedback on students’ time management, organization, assignment completion, and overall effort in class.”

Question for teachers-is this helpful for YOU to have students/parents know this? Doesn’t the grading of at least 7 formative and 2 summatives a quarter give this same information? If formatives show failing grades, doesn’t that already tell students/parents about assignment completion and overall effort, etc.? How is a work habit score different/separately helpful?

For teachers that have to implement this, what is the new info that a work habits score gives that makes it worth your time to do yet even more grading? This just seems like more work for teachers for no reason so wondering what I am missing?

“Changes to Middle and High School Report Card Feedback

With the first quarter of the school year ending on Friday, October 31, families can expect student report cards to be available the week of November 10.
FCPS has revised the way teachers provide feedback on report cards, so you may notice some new comments. Specifically, comments have been revised to provide more detailed feedback for students and families.
Also, teachers will now include a Work Habits mark each quarter for each student. This scale provides feedback on students’ time management, organization, assignment completion, and overall effort in class. This is meant as feedback to families and will not appear on a student’s transcript.
