Sadly, I doubt that most adults can write a decent five-paragraph essay. I am not kidding. Remember, only about a third of American adults earn a college degree.

I think that the five-paragraph essay format is taught during middle school or high school. That's not to say that most students learn how to do it.

Kindergarten students should be able to write 2-3 sentences about the same topic.
First grade should be able to write a paragraph, WITH SUPPORT. (I taught my low income, ESL kids how to do this with lots and lots of scaffolding, talking through ideas, using sentence frames and graphic organizers, etc.)
Second grade should be able to write a decently formed paragraph independently (for the most part).
Third grade should be able to write a few paragraphs on a topic.
Fourth and fifth graders should be able to write a 5 paragraph essay, WITH SUPPORT.

You are insane. There are maybe five 7 year olds in the country that could do that.

I’m a writing tutor and have taught elementary writing for a long time. Most 7 year-olds cannot write multiple paragraphs unless it’s a narrative story and mostly active plot (think first this happens and then that happens, events listed one after the other.) Even then, they need a lot of scaffolding and it takes a long time. Almost no 7 year-old can write a multi paragraph persuasive essay. Nor can they just sit down and write in one go with no preplanning.

Your son sounds like his writing is very age appropriate.

No. Second graders don’t write that much in DCPS. I don’t think my kid was attempting that length until third or fourth.
