American was recommended for my ADHD kid with pretty bad grades by our counselor but he wanted to be further from home. Also recommended Catholic.

American took students with a sub 3.0 gpa from our private school. Not a hard admit when full pay. At all.

you'll have to trust that I know what is appropriate, then. the kid can keep their doctor appts with current doctors if they're in DC, and that I know what they can handle/want. If my kid needed emergency care in 5 min, they wouldn't be living in a dorm or college most likely.

And I don't mind Mason at all, asking for other options close by. I've made it clear that I think Mason is great.

marymount is like 15 minutes further than mason and easier to get into but more expensive are you rich

Right now 11th grade 2 APs 4.0 avg after 10th- all A's so far this year, but maybe will end with a b or 2 due to health challenges, not surei. Will most likely take 3 AP next year. Honors for all core and will reach AP span senior year.

We don't have a lot of naviance data since it isn't a frequent admit at our school.

I don't know if they will be too hard to get into and DC should look at a Marymount or Catholic, but we aren't religious so would prefer the other if possible.

It sounds like you are VA in-state? If so, just to remind that GMU is slightly over $33k all in, whereas American is $80k and George Washington is $92k. Our DD, too, needed to be close to home. We didn’t have the luxury of looking at private versus in-state VA. DC had a great four years living in the dorms at GMU, rarely came home and took advantage of GMU’s five satellite campuses including Korea. please don’t write off a campus just because your kid hears some crap at school about 13th grade. GMU is enormous - they are never going to see their high school friends. Also, what major?

Oh definitely no disrespect to GMU- we both think it is a great school. It is just that we live like 5 min away and have spent a lot of time there already. The kid has had a few years of very rough breaks so if we can make it work we are going to try to help them. Not sure of major yet but probably need to start thinking of it.

What about Shenandoah University or another nearby VA school?

That is another option to look at, thanks PP. I didn't realize it was so close

This was in 2023, but my DS got into GW with 20K merit aid: 35 ACT, 12 AP courses (he did not take all the exams, but most of them were 5s). GPA was inflated, because from MCPS, at 4.67 weighted. Colleges recalculate anyway.

Since he has ADHD and autism, he had a resource class instead of an elective for 9th and 10th grade, and the resource class was noted on his transcript and seen by every school he applied to. He was rejected from Georgetown, probably partly due to this. GW did not mind, and offered him accommodations too!

In all honesty, I don't think any school is worth 70K a year, let alone 90K. But we have the money, DS felt most comfortable at GW, and his autism makes him pretty rigid, so...

Best of luck to your child, OP. I hope their health improves.

Your daughter should plan to take SAT/ACT.

Sorry, I don't know how I got sidetracked on merit.

I should add that I wasn't totally aware of GW 92K price tag though. Ouch. Need to do more research.

Not a hard admit from our school.
Apply EA to American.
