There are a handful of jobs requiring letters, and serious employers will call to follow up anyway.

If you are actually giving notice, ask then assuming it's not received poorly. I don't know that letters are a thing any more.

Can you ask previous owners?


Op- I can ask the former C level who hired me so maybe that's the way to do it.

Somebody told me to do this so asking here if it makes sense? Will be announcing that I am semi retiring shortly. Planning on doing some consulting, interim work, etc. Will probably have a need for references. Do I ask the boss for a letter now, or just mention that I would like to use him for one of it is needed later on? Also, should I tell him I am retiring or semi retiring, or does it matter? Company has new owners and should I say, they are not as affable as the previous group so treading lightly.
