I started a new contract job a few days after the shutdown. Different agency but like State Department, our activities are mission critical. I’m delayed getting a new badge and slow tech support but that’s about it.

Many national security related staff and their contractors are still working due to different funding cycles and/or international work. I used to work for State and our activities (visa related) continued during past shutdowns.

DOS incrementally funds probably 80% of their domestic staffing support contracts/task orders. A lot of it will depend on how by he program office is set up and if a COR is actually onsite and able to be present. Your firm will also have to worry about the badging process and probably the 254 process if that hasn’t already been resolved. Your bureau may or may not provide equipment, burial they do provide laptops at the very least

Does anyone know whether newly hired contractors will be onboarding during the shutdown?

Depends on the funding for your particular contract, and whether the fed employees associated with your contract are working or furloughed. Some contracts get incrementally funded a month or two at a time and those will run out pretty soon, while others have many months of funding.
