Laurel - right by the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab - for next summer

Chelsea parent here. Our kid has made great strides and is really happy there. Huge growth in reading and a big drop in stress.

Just wanted to add that the school will be moving out of its current location to a nicer building in Laurel (or is it Columbia?).

Hello DC Urban Moms and Dads,

My name is Frank Mills and I am the Executive Director of the Chelsea School in Hyattsville. I have been an employee of the school for the last 20 years, and I am very proud of the work that we do for students with learning differences. A little about our school:

- We are a small school (85 students max) for students who have been diagnosed with a specific learning disability (dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia), an attention deficit disorder, or an autism spectrum disorder requiring low support.
- Our largest class size is 8 students. Most classes are 5-6 students each.
- Literacy is at the core of our program, which uses the Orton Gillingham methodology for remediation. Every student in the school, grades 5-12, receives a daily 45-minute reading class taught by a reading specialist.
- We are a nonpublic school, which means we can accept both publicly-funded and private students.
- We follow the public school Common Core curriculum for all classes.
- All of our publicly-funded students have an IEP which drives our instructional programming.
- The curb appeal of our building isn't the best, but once inside, you'll discover a beautiful school with a positive culture and community spirit.
