And OP wasn't rude to her to make her aware. She was overly friendly and it worked. What's the problem?

Got a new colleague earlier this year, and she's a real snot. Only talks to her own team even to the point of ignoring greetings, ices out other colleagues, bypasses SOPs, generally acts like she has all the authority and no one can tell her anything. (Reader, she does not have the authority. She is well below me in seniority, but on a different branch of the org chart.)

I seethed when it made extra work for me, and I hated the vibe she created, especially when she was dismissive of folks on my team. But I decided life's too short and to try to win her over. No loss for me if I failed, right?

But it worked. After a few months of engaging her in conversation while blithely ignoring her dead-eyed stare, of asking for her opinion on things I didn't need her input on, and of mentioning her interests, I won. She has started to say hello to me! Today for the first time, she sought me out for a pleasant greeting. She has initiated conversations about work AND non-work topics! It's like when a rescue animal sits next to you on the couch for the first time.

Yeah so I just had to tell someone. It's as big a win as I'm going to get in my sector these days.
