depends on the neighborhood. I think 5th grade would be the young side. I would not let a kid go alone.

Alone? No kid wants to Trick or Treat alone!! If they absolutely don't have even one friend (huge issue - you need to work on that!), you go with them. Go with them and hang back when they go to the door.

4th grade with a friend IMO. In a very busy TOT neighborhood where there were lots of people out.

DD, however, didn't solo until 6th grade because her BFFs mom insisted on chaperoning.

5th - 6th in a group seems typical, but IMO it depends on the group dynamics, the kid's sense of direction, and of course the traffic situation. In 5th we had a neighborhood kid leading a group of followers through storm drains and people's back yards; I had to find my kid in a culvert and make them walk with adults the rest of the night. In 6th, the same group wanted parents to come to help carry the loot

Mine went with friends last year in 3rd grade.

In our very Halloweenesque neighborhood, parents supervise because kids go out at night, cars are driving home from work, and the streets are narrow. Kids run across the streets all the time to flit from decorated house to decorated house without a thought for vehicles - even though usually they look both ways, on that night they're all high as kites on candy and excitement. I see it every year, and every year a motorist has a near miss with a kid jumping into the street.

Although if the shutdown lasts 'til then, maybe it won't be as dangerous

So know your neighborhood.

Kids seem to do it at 8 or 9 in our neighborhood. We live in an enclosed HOA community.
