I love a pan of roasted root vegetables- Carrots, parsnips, celery root, golden beets (I find them milder and less messy than red). And I add cubed sweet potato in orange or purple or both.

Parker house rolls are a must in our house. Also, leftovers - for our family, the second day of Thanksgiving dinner is maybe better than the first?

I love making the NYT plum torte (most requested recipe in the history of the NYT, and super easy to boot) with cranberries instead of plums.

Can anyone post the plum torte recipe?

If you google “NYT plum torte”, you can find many sites that allow the recipe to be printed.

We have a fairly small group, so we pick our favorite instead of having a bunch of different options (e.g. only one cooked green vegetable instead of green beans AND brussel sprouts). For sides we always include:
Mashed potatoes
Sweet potatoes
Stuffing
Green beans steamed with butter and salt & pepper
Gravy
Cranberry sauce
Some kind of fresh, crisp salad - either a green salad, or a cabbage slaw with apple slices and cider vinegar dressing, or endives and citrus.
Pumpkin, apple, and pecan pie for dessert

That's about the bare minimum as far as my family is concerned. We usually skip rolls because nobody cares that much about them, but some would consider them essential too.

Steamed corn or peas/carrots for those who don't want all the add-ons in the brussels sprouts and green bean casserole.

You can't not have regular mashed potatoes and gravy.

Mashed potatoes (with or without bacon bits), cranberry sauce, green beans (no casserole with a can of white, gloppy soup - we're better than that now) or asparagus, really high quality rolls.

Mashed potatoes because I don't care for sweet potatoes. For veg, I cook fresh green beans and carrots.

What would you make as sides? I usually have stuffing, roasyed brussels sprouts bc mil loves them, mashed sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce. What are other sides/dishes am I not thinking of? Have a guest for whom it'll be the first Thanksgiving ever and want it all optimal. Going to make pecan and pumpkin pie for dessert.
