Riderwood has some pricing online for independent living - there’s both the buy in plus the money fee.

Maybe there is a friend or family member who lives there and could reserve a room for your mom?

My mom and her friends are very happy there.

My parents are interested in Riderwood—can you tell me a little more about your mom’s experience? Is she in independent living or assisted living? What are the actual monthly costs for her situation?

She sells the condo and does private pay until that runs out. Then she applies for Medicaid.

We’ve done this twice now.

The continuing care facilities in NJ, where my parents live, that i visited had a respite program that was 3 -4 weeks long. In essence a trial period, or respite for caregivers, as others have said. They did not have a shorter temporary stay than 3 weeks.

I moved my mom to Grand Oaks, attached to Sibley Hospital, for a month into a furnished apartment, used for respite care. She did so well there, she never went back to her condo. We sold the condo and she moved into an unfurnished Grand Oaks apartment.

One of my neighbors stayed at the Kensington on Westbard in Bethesda for a month while her daughter was traveling. While she was there her daughter asked me if I could drop by to visit her. I went a couple of times with another neighbor and we could see that she was making friends and settling in. It actually felt a lot like going to visit our kids for their freshman families weekend. Our neighbor is now planning to move there once an apartment becomes available.

Yes, most offer this type of arrangement. It's a great option if an elderly parent lives at home with you, but you want to take a 2 week vacation (and the parent really can't travel). Basically, a hotel-type of arrangement but with full assisted living benefits.

They may have a minimum day requirement, but it's like 5 days...not 30 days.

Thank you. This is exactly our situation, and I'd really love a vacation with just my family.

If they have space, you are likely to be able to work-out an arrangement. Even if it's not publicialy stated. Meet with the person in charge whenever possible and discuss what you have in mind. They want to get a sense of you, your parent, and what they are getting into.

I would love to have my parent do this before signing up for tens of thousands of dollars in costs.
