OMG that is such an extreme and WRONG view. OP don't listen to this PP, it's absurd to say that if you aren't getting invited to invite only clinics you have zero chance of making that team. The last few years are FULL of examples of girls who never went to an invite clinic for a specific team and were offered a spot. To be clear, the demand for spots still far outweighs the number of spots, so most girls who try out will not get offered a spot. But the idea that the only spots offered on most teams only go to girls who did invite only clinics (or were on team last year) is absurd.
I thought the PP may be talking about super-competitive clubs, which I don't know much about. Note that their DD made it into college, which means she played at a higher level.

The MOCO "invite only clinics" are different. MOCO invites to these clinics everyone who expresses interest in the club (each player is invited to at least one clinic). These are not the type of clinics where the club invites only the players they are interested in. It's a matter of scheduling for them because they want to give everyone a chance to be seen on the court. They only invite the number of players that they can handle - I think they limit the number to 24 (somebody, please correct the number if it is not accurate). It's a good strategy for MOCO because they make good money out of these clinics. Plus many players get out of the clinics with the illusion that they have a chance to play for MOCO, so they show up at the tryouts as well.
I think this is right, at least for MoCo. We just signed up for them and for the first one they “invited” her. How could they know how she played? She does say she gets attention and positive feedback from the coaches when she’s there. And is on the “good” court when there’s more than one- some of them have been quite small, which is nice. Anyway, I think think MoCo is long shot for her anyway so she is going to try for it but have several less competitive clubs she’s also going for. This process is so nervous-making- ugh!
The role of a coach is to find something positive to say about every player. Then sandwich some advice on how they can do it even better or work on another skill that can be improved. Those who go negative on the players have a good chance of driving the players away from the club or even volleyball. Being on the top court in these MOCO "invite only clinics" doesn't mean anything - most of their current players are not there (or spread out among multiple clinics). You only see part of your competition and probably not the strongest.

How did the 2 clinics she already did there work out, and how interested is she in that club? If she's sure she's more interested in the other club you're already signed up for, I'd do that one and maybe reach out to the invite club and just say how happy she was to be invited but unfortunately you can't make that day/time.

My DD got her first invite to an invite-only clinic. We were hoping to do an open clinic at another (lower-tier) club at the same time but now we feel we shouldn't turn down the invite clinic as it may increase the chances of an offer from this club. What are your thoughts - should we go to the invite - only and let go of our only chance to try the other club or let go of the invite-only clinic since she's already done 2 clinics there?
