Yeah I don't get it. Perhaps I am better than other women, because I am capable of going multiple hours without drinking water. I can count the times I've bought a disposable plastic water bottle in the last year on one hand. I have water with meals, and it's plenty.

I see women in meetings suuuuucking on their water bottles, backwashing into their water bottles, chugging water like they're on a cocaine bender and I just. don't. get it. Are you all diabetics??

Oh it's not a huge environmental flex to own a dozen heavy, manufactured, non-recyclable status-bottles that had to be shipped on a diesel freighter from the other side of the world, of which you have a "favorite" while the others all sit around unused. If you owned ONE water bottle you'd maybe have an argument. But be honest, water-addicts: How many stanleys, yetis, hydroflasks, and owalas have you had shipped to you from China?

We all used to smoke and have that oral fixation. It's now water bottles.

If you go to the doctor in the U.S., for almost any reason, they will ask you how much water you are drinking and suggest you drink more. Especially if you are overweight: the thinking on weight loss is that if you drink a lot of water, you will be less hungry and also not retain water due to salty food. That's why everyone carries water bottles.

Take the above and add in a desire to not use disposable plastic bottles (for health and environmental reasons) and everyone's carrying a reusable bottle.

That not only is it beneficial for us health wise (as opposed to consuming sugary drinks or alcohol) but that it also has aesthetic effects as well such as glowing skin!

And women are very focused on having great skin!!

But American women aren’t measurably healthier or have better skin.

30 years ago about the only bottled water was Mineral Water or Evian/Fiji imported stuff.

There just weren't any regular drinking water for sale other than those exotics. People would have laughed at the notion of buying bottled water.

But years of conditioning has made it where people began to accept it, and now many don't even drink tap water anymore just bottled water or delivery, because they want to avoid the flouride, chlorine, etc. in the tap water.

However while avoiding those things, they get more microplastic exposure since big oil got everyone convinced plastic packaging is the way to go instead of glass.

Glass is much better.

I laughed, but realized you are onto something.

Men definitely do it but with plastic water bottles. Tourists tend to do it most. Sure the countries with the highest population use the most bottles but places like France and Italy use massive amounts of plastic bottles considering the population -- which they will blame on tourists.

For me it is because I vowed to not use or buy plastic water bottles. I haven't for 7+ years. I don't carry a my super old Hydroflask with me everywhere but plenty of places.

In Madrid, it was likely tourists you saw, and as a tourist it's nice to have some water while walking around for hours looking at that amazing city.

But it is funny to see everyone so concerned about water intake- such a sea change from the 70s or even 80s when people did fine with the occasional water fountain.

I take mine everywhere, it is filtered and allows me to drink water from all types of questionable sources and saves on plastic waste. Typically we as a people are all dehydrated, the question isn’t why do we it’s why don’t you?

What’s the genesis and current deep attachment to water bottles that American women have (at all ages)?

In Madrid for the last month and American women of all ages clutching their water bottles — at the hotel, walking about, just pretty much at all times of the day except going out at night.

Are American women uniquely dehydrated?
