We live in Somerset, which is one of the incorporated towns in Chevy Chase. Before that we lived in an unincorporated area. There are a lot of benefits to living in an incorporated area, which mostly boil down to municipal services being provided at the town level rather than by the county, which means they’re much more responsive to residents and doing business with them (like if your trash isn’t picked up) is easier. Some of the permitting requirements are stricter, but I think less of a black box than dealing with MoCo. We also have a pool and tennis courts that are only for town residents (meaning no waitlist for the pool and easy scheduling to reserve a tennis court) and the cost is included in the taxes (town taxes are basically reallocated from what we pay to MoCo).

Somerset isn’t as pretty as the Town, but it’s still very nice with a lot of mature trees, etc and the elementary school is walkable. Friendship Heights is walkable for most and downtown Bethesda isn’t far, although most adults drive.

The biggest downside is the cost, and there’s even a premium versus unincorporated areas in CCMD. It’s also pretty homogeneous but probably not significantly different from other areas of CCMD.

Walkability varies— some parts are pretty close to Wisconsin Ave and Metro (and groceries, restaurants etc) and some parts are closer to Connecticut Ave which has less convenience for commute and shopping (except maybe Brookeville market).

The walkable ES is only 3-5— there is another school for K-2 a couple miles away (ime most people who hear about that are unhappy about it but most people who have sent their kids like both schools, altho it’s a little awkward if you have kids at each school).

There are no meaningful differences in a macro sense but of course if you want to talk about Martin’s additions vs the Village or whatever people can do it for hours.

If you just mean “I’m moving to DC and considering all the >$1m neighborhoods,” CCMD is mostly older housing, lovely mature trees, pockets of more like >$2.5m and reasonable proximity to everything you need. It’s not that different from any of the other close in, expensive neighborhoods.

Lots of kids walk to school. Lots of dog walkers. Lots of kids in private schools. Low crime.

There’s also the mailing address. Friendship Heights Village, for example, is in Chevy Chase.
