It may not be about you. The manager may have been voluntold to be in charge of interns. Maybe, the manager thinks their own boss hates them. Maybe they really wanted to manage the interns but something bad happened personally taking focus. I would assume it has nothing to do with you and do a knock it out of the park job. And cultivate some others in the office so you have a good reference.

If you’re an intern, you’re likely very new to the employee/manager dynamic and possibly fixating on it more than is helpful. Here’s my advice:

Focus on doing your job to the best of your abilities.

Don’t expect everyone to like you, in fact, most people will not think of you much, but you ARE entitled to respectful treatment.

Find the people you do get along with, whether it is peers or mentors or what, and they will be your support system at work.

I had a thoughtful, lovely boss who left about 9 months ago for a better opportunity. The interim was a peer that I always thought I had a good relationship with. She has been hell on wheels, belittling, nasty, and rude. Apparently, I'm not the only one. She didn't get the nod for permanent and will go back to being my peer in a couple of weeks. Hoping the new person coming in from the outside is better. I agree with the PP who said some people are only concerned about those they want to impress.

OP, I've found that many, many people either do not have a professional mask and all emotions show through or they are only concerned about those they want to impress, and it usually isn't their lower level colleagues or direct reports. Or both. It's a power move, too.

It used to bother me, but now I just focus on their weaknesses and mistakes when they make faces or talk down to me, all with my professional mask in place. They also don't like when they are challenged by people they disrespect.

It may be all in your head, but if it's not that's still okay -- it happens to everyone at least once.

But people’s reactions are not always wrong. It’s worth considering whether your own behavior is the cause of their reaction and whether it merits adjusting. Yes, you need to recognize when someone else is being unreasonable, but that applies to yourself too.

Not everyone is going to like you.

And sometimes they have a good reason for it, and it’s worth adjusting your behavior.

Leave the kid alone. We're talking about an intern here. Are always this toxic? Doctor, heal thyself.

Stop worrying about that and focus on what you’re doing to help the business effort.

Signed an intern who overthinks every interaction with all co-workers and thinks their boss hates them
