An 11-year-old girl riding a bicycle died Thursday afternoon after being struck by a school bus in Rockville, according to Montgomery County police.

The fatal collision occurred around 3 p.m. in the area of Russet Road and Bauer Drive, police said on social media and during a press briefing Thursday afternoon. Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service crews and police officers were dispatched to the incident at 3:12 p.m.

First responders located girl near the rear of the school bus, according to police. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The girl, who was not identified, was a student at Earle B. Wood Middle School at 14615 Bauer Drive and lived in the area of the collision, according to officials. At the time of the crash, the school bus from transporting students from the middle school. The bus driver and students on the bus were not injured in the collision.

“This is heartbreaking news for our school system and our community,” said Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Superintendent Thomas Taylor during a press briefing with police at Bauer Drive and Greenspan Lane. “No words can truly capture the pain that our school community is feeling at this time. This is every parent’s worst nightmare and every educator’s greatest fear.”

The bus driver was taken to another location following the collision to meet with MCPS and police crisis teams, according to officials. A second bus was “dispatched to the scene, and all students were transferred and transported to a reunification location,” police said Thursday evening in a release.

“Our focus right now is on supporting the family, our school community that is hurting and our staff. Montgomery County is a community that cares for one another deeply, and it’s moments like this where we come together to support and grieve,” Taylor said. “Thank you to everyone for keeping this child’s family in your thoughts — this child’s classmates, the staff that works with this child — and your hearts as we work through this very difficult time together.”

Taylor told reporters that a crisis response team of counselors and central services employees were at the middle school to offer counseling and emotional support to students and families. He noted the county’s Department of Health Human Services has also reached out to offer additional support services.

MCPS should reassess walk zones. Many walkers are walking on unsafe paths to schools now.

This is a very good idea.

Now? They have always been unsafe. We don’t have stop signs on every corner nor sidewalks on every block.

I live in this neighborhood. That intersection is not unsafe and there's sidewalks on both sides. It's very likely the girl was crossing in the crosswalk and the bus turned into her.

The kids on electric scooters look vulnerable. They don’t always stop or go slowly over driveways, over roads, or down sidewalks.

I heard there have been multiple collisions at that intersection in recent years. It's so sad.

I saw a HS aged boy walk right in front of a moving school bus in the middle of the road this week. I thought I was about to watch a horrible accident happen. The bus driver yelled at him out her window. My window was up so I couldnt hear what she said but I can imagine.

I feel terrible for every single person involved in what happened today. We don’t know anything about the circumstances that would allow us to place blame on anyone.

While all of us are out in the streets, we need to be mindful as drivers and as pedestrians.
