Have you applied to be added to the Teacher Pool first? Last year, nobody told me that and I applied to like 55 jobs directly and found out that if you don't apply to the Teacher Pool first, your applications go straight to the trash. Principals aren't even allowed to look at your application. It's the generic "Teach With MCPS" posting. Once you go through that process, which took me about 3 weeks, you can then apply directly to posted jobs and be interviewed

Not necessarily true because I did the same thing and emailed principals of jobs I was REALLY interested in and got interviews.

Reach out to the department chairs/resource teachers directly if you are interested in a permanent position. You can get hired to teach while you are still in the process of getting MD certification.

I just resigned from teaching and started subbing here and there. It was a very confusing process to get approved to sub.

In Careers, you have to apply to the generic posting 'Substitute Teacher Positions 2025-26'. When I look at careers, it is the first listing. Once you do that, you will receive an email with next steps, which include finger printing and employment eligibility. Getting a finger printing appointment took awhile. I lucked out and got a cancellation, so check back often. I applied on August 15th, received approval Sept. 4th. Then it took another week to get into in the sub system, to be able to accept jobs.

Contact the principals of schools that you are interested in directly. This will speed up the process tremendously.

My process took about 4 weeks when I applied in Feb. I'm not a licensed teacher though. Just someone who got laid off and needed a reason to get out of bed in the morning.

I submitted an application, got a phone interview scheduled about a week later, and then I moved onto the background/fingerprinting step. I never tried for a long term sub opportunity, I would just apply to the positions that appealed to me for the day/days I had available that week.
