You need to leave the Schengen area with 3 months left in your passport and if there are delays or cancellations? You’re just cutting it too close.

State Depart says Italy only requires 3 months left on passport, googling Italy requirements also says only 3 months from date you leave (I have that). United website says it defers to the country's requirements. I think I'll be fine, does everyone agree?

The other option is to do an urgent appointment with State Dept, but that seems fraught with shutdown. But if that's the better course, I will do that!

The only info that matters is what Italy government website says- which is 3 months from the date you leave. United will use the Timatic tool to confirm you meet the requirements, that's tied directly into government data.

As long as you can show a plane ticket for your return, and your passport expires more than 3 months after that date, you meet the requirements.

"passport valid for at least three months after the planned date of departure from the Schengen Area."

This. Honestly, I’d get a new passport so as not to run into issues.
