My 11yo DS still thinks that girls are annoying, disgusting, and utterly irredeemable in every way. So I guess there’s a bit of a spectrum at this age. Fun times.

It’s totally normal and nothing you need to do about it that you otherwise wouldn’t be doing. At one point my DD started referring to a boy in her class as her “boyfriend.” I asked her “what is a boyfriend” and she said it’s a boy in class who you like and he likes you too but you don’t sit together or see each other outside of school. Seems accurate based on what I saw.

They’re little and playing around with big ideas. This isn’t anything new.

I think using this time to encourage hygiene and cleaning up his bedroom is the window you needed to get these changes in place.

5th grade is normal for crushes

There's nothing for you to do here beyond what you already should be doing.

You should be monitoring his phone for harmful things
You should be having ongoing discussions about appropriate behavior etc
You don't have to tailor this to his crush.

He doesn't need to specifically discuss his crush with you it's okay for him to have private feelings and only discuss things with his friends.

Don't embarrass him by constantly talking about or asking about the girl.

I don't understand the question. If nothing is happening what is there to engage in? Are you shocked that boys sometimes like girls?

Why is your 5th grader texting?

I have a 5th grader and a lot of boy moms are like you...super excited for their sons to have a girlfriend. Either they'll be friends or it will fizzle out. If he is texting obviously you should be reading those. My son does not have access to texting yet.
Don't push him to grow up too fast.

Are they? Genuinely curious because I have both genders and I never wanted any of the kids to have "official" S.O.s at that age. Is a "boy mom" a mom who has 0 daughters or a mom who has 1+ sons?

Just teasing and chasing, etc. do I need to have a talk with him? DS says stay the hell out of it and leave him alone.

This.
Quit trying to control and mess up other people's lives. It won't lead anywhere good and you will just get blamed if things go wrong.
