Several states have lowered the total hours requirement to 120 from 150.

Have you taken any accounting courses ? If not,take the first two courses and then look for an accelerated program to complete the rest of the required course work (assuming that you have already earned a college degree).

Accelerated programs are usually offered through continuing education divisions of universities.

The first two courses can be taken online. In the past, I have recommended online courses from UC-Davis and from UC-Berkeley, but there are many options. Finding the accelerated certificate programs is a bit more challenging, but they do exist.

If you have never taken an accounting courses, the entire curriculum will cost about $13,000 and can be completed in one semester plus one summer.

If you have taken the first two accounting courses and have retained and utilized that knowledge, then you can complete the remaining requirements over the course of one summer.

This is OP and I took two accounting classes as part of my MBA program.

Do private companies hire CPAs (not accounting firms)? Do they hire a lot? How much do they pay?

Since you have an MBA you arleady have the 150 hours. The CPA test when you take it you just click which state you are taking it for. No longer do you need to go to that state to take test.

Also I have an MBA in Finance and I only need to specific accounting courses needed to sit for test I think in New Hampshire. I took them at a local community college and my work allowed me to expense it so cost nothing.

You first have to see that you need, which I did. I submitted my transcripts to New Hampshire, they replied back to sit for test I need to courses in accounting. they can be community college level and a C or higher is fine.

In end I passed two courses and got permission to sit for exam but never did it.

CPA joke:

Question: What's the difference between an actuary and a CPA?

Answer: When an actuary talks to you, he looks at his shoes;

When a CPA speaks to you, he looks at your shoes.

I have an MBA and an unfocused career so far: I’ve been a chief of staff, done project/program management, and some IT work. I used to think I wanted to be an executive but I know now that I do not. I want to have a hard skill and wonder if it’s a good idea to become a CPA. (I was just laid off and am turning 40 so having some existential angst.) Any advice welcome. TIA.
