Unfortunately for me, I was hoping to find someplace to purchase regularly vs a one-off goldbelly order. I prefer italian cookies bc they are less sweet and often have almond and other nuts. Maybe the Eataly will eventually open in Tysons …

Yeah, I get where you are coming from OP. I love those cookies too and having them fresh is extra special. I try to just make a point of getting them whenever I'm in a place that has them. You'd be surprised where you can find good Italian bakeries in this country! We found a great one in St. Petersburg, FL, a couple years ago that is now a must-visit when we are there, and have our faves in Baltimore, Philly, Richmond, Pittsburgh, and of course NYC and Boston when we are traveling in or, importantly, through any of these cities.

It's a shame DC has never had the kind of Italian immigrant community to sustain that kind of place. We love a couple of the Italian delis in the area but none of them have their own bakeries or make their own cookies -- PPs are right the standard is to just get them sourced from one of the big Brooklyn bakeries. Maybe one day!

I miss that Union Station Vaccaros too! Used to work nearby. Much better treat than Starbucks.

Sorry, nothing like that in DC anymore.

+1

I miss the shop that they used to have in Union Station for a while. It was great for quick — and very welcomed — hostess gifts.

Suspect most of these cookies are made from a handful of bakeries in NYC and shipped to Italian groceries across the country. I haven't had local ones "better" than the ones from NYC. Just order online.

I’ve had the cookies at Vace, they are fine (not really better than the italian cookies you can purchase at Giant!) and are pre-packaged and shipped in from Brooklyn.

I’m hoping for freshly baked ones. I’ll check Catania bakery, thanks!

I’m not the PP, but when I want cookies like that, I head straight to Vaccaro’s. It doesn’t take that long to get to Baltimore.

Try Cornucopia in Bethesda. He usually has a nice selection of Italian cookies. I’m not sure if they’re baked in house or if he gets them from a bakery.
