Tryouts are done. Emails go out today and tomorrow I think. I have not heard of anyone getting an offer yet. At third tryout they said 2-3 days after.

There is still another tryout next week.

Forget CYA. It’s horrible for player development over there. Get him a good trainer who will work on his development and that trainer will also find him a team to play on where your son is able to develop.

He does not need to be fast and nimble in fifth grade. He needs to be able to get a rebound and make a layup.

Coming from a coach, if he's tall and CYA has three teams, he has a better than not chance of making it. That age especially is hard with the taller kids who hit the growth spurt first, uphill battle as far as coordination. Focus on ball handling, rebounding, and put backs around the rim. If he can do those three things competently, he will make a team and probably play.

Did they say whether there were going to be 2 or 3 teams? It can vary year to year. I think it partly depends on whether they have enough coaches. It will obviously be easier to get a spot if they have 3 teams. They will take 10-11 kids per team.

It can take a while to hear back if your kid isn't one of the top players. They will offer to those kids first and give them a short timeframe to say yes or no. Then work their way down. Keep in mind some of the top kids are trying out at a couple different places and will decide which one they want. That might open up more spots depending on how it plays out. If your son really wants to play on a select team you might look at other places too like SYA or wherever else your zip code is allowed to play.

Impossible to run a decent tryout with so many kids in an ES gym.

Did you take him to any of the open gyms prior to tryouts? Thats where the coaches actually choose the kids.

I’m honestly embarrassed to admit there were some shorter kids with much more hustle. He was not in the fastest group by a long shot (not slow either though. He can definitely rebound but he just seems to not be as coordinated as some of these kids because he’s grown so fast it’s like a giant baby giraffe. I didn’t realize how good the top 25 kids would be. My husband thinks a lot of this was because they were in an elementary school gym and at no point did they go full court. I’m not trying to make excuses but when you are so tall being on a tiny court gives so little room to really spread out and show other skills (ball handling, etc). So many ball hogs too that is was hard to even understand what the coaches could see.

Last year, CYA had three 5th grade boy's team for FCYBL. Tall is great, but can he rebound? Rebounding and hustle will definitely get him on a team.

How competitive is it for 5th grade boys? How many teams? There were so many kids. My son is very tall (like top 3-5 there) but was far from top ten Monday night in terms of speed or skill. It almost feels like his best skill is being tall. We go back Friday but he’s already feeling demoralized. There were tons of mid size to even short great kids.
