What would be the signs of that? Would it be apparent to a relatively switched on person that it's time to go? Because plenty of people are saying it now, and I don't really see it as being that dire (even though I detest the adminitsration)

Ukraine stopped fighting aged men from leaving. Russia, soviet block countries, East Germany until 1989. China has some controls for religious minorities. This is recent recent history.
if a country splits apart (and the us might) and too many people try to move to the "better" part, there could be an exit ban by the more authoritarian/less economically successful part.

There may be some seeking political asylum in other countries at some point, especially if well known dissidents have property confiscated or jobs taken away or are threatened in such a way that they need to GTFO.
