Oh no, you're being lazy - schools are always hiring. You can get an office job or cafeteria helper type job at your children's school, or you can substitute teach. If you get a bus driver job, they will pay for you to get your commercial driver's license. There are also retail jobs and temp agencies.

The kids are in college, the husband is unemployed, and the wife won't also look for any kind of job herself?

Is he really looking? When I was laid off age I was job hunting at least 55 hours a week. Sometimes more. How hard is he looking?

Im 54 laid off 10 months. Svp level.
Can he set up an llc so the gap doesn’t seem so large? What about adjunct prof jobs or teaching jobs ?

If was a VP he must have made millions over his career, you will be fine.

It would be a good idea to get a job doing whatever you can OP, and for your dh to try to find a low stakes part time job (that he doesn't have to list on his resume) while he is looking as well.

Most people I know who have been fortunate to get jobs after age 50 get them through their network.

If money is an issue, I would suggest you look for a job as well, OP, especially since your kids are off at college.

No one is hiring, and they use AI to run layoffs so they certainly don’t need to hire someone in HR

Why doesn't he think he has gotten any offers after interviews? Maybe he needs to do some practice interviews to see what is happening. I knew that people say it's age discrimination but I have seen a lot of late career people who are more senior say some really dumb things in interviews. Especially if they aren't used to the terrible overly structured interviews most companies are using now.

You’ve only been out for seven years? So you worked until your kids were 11-12 (if they’re in college now)? That’s interesting because I feel like most people do the opposite.

Anyways, seven years isn’t an eternity. I’d try and get something, even if it’s lower paid than your prior role. You don’t have childcare costs (obviously aside from college) so if you are just at home not earning income, anything is better than nothing. What’s your field?

Apparently it's also hard for him to get back in after 2 years out of work, so you should both be looking. Your kids are in college, they do not need you at home anymore.
