There are other classes available, but they are more basic than digital literacy -- focused on getting students to read more fluently. OP, if I were you I would reach out to the teacher and request a conference to get the teacher's perspective and share concerns about the workload. It's a long time to wait until conferences on Thanksgiving week, and at least at our school you only get 5 mins then.

There is no MCPS mandate to take digital literacy or a WL. Keep pushing back and include Central Office. Any principal trying to force your kid to take either of those classes is just trying to rig their school report card or great schools rating.

It's either digital literacy or foreign language, OP. Which would you prefer for your kid? Before agreeing to this last year, you should have inquired about the implications.

One month in, and we're finding it's equal in text- and writing-demands to the regular English 6 that she's also enrolled in. Could this be specific to the teacher or is it the curriculum? Whyever would she have been put into this class if she was struggling to produce lengthy writing in 4th/5th grades?

I could be wrong but I think this is a path for kids who may not be ready to start a foreign language in 6th and need some more literacy work in English first.

Plus smaller classes than with traditional English.
