I am AARP eligible. When I bring up these fears to my dad (I tend to be a little chicken little about the future) he (who is a brilliant 80 yo who really has seen everything, including the vietnam war), is strangely calm. He's seen the cycles and seen how they end. And begin again. I don't know if that's comforting.

So maybe just wait and see, oh "not AARP eligible"

I was talking with a fellow department leader who graduated post-2011 and with the exception of covid hasn’t experienced a market dip. They are way too optimistic about the prospects of our industry over the next 2-3 years. Even said “well it won’t affect us.”

Wrong! Our industry is predictably cyclical and lags by 6-12 months and when we feel it, we feel it hard.

I kind of want to burst their bubble — mostly so they don’t make a move that will have long term consequences- but the other part of me thinks I should not be an old hag and let them live in ignorant bliss.

Cool story right? Would you be factual and wave the flag or just mind my own business?

I’m getting my team ready by strategizing now…been there done that…

Recession? Market correction sure. But there is no reason based on the numbers to think a recession is at hand. Will there be one? Sure but no reason to think now. We are not really in a slow down. Economy is strong overall with a few weaker spots.

Trump is trying to drive workers out of the DMV and implode the local economy as part of his revenge tour. Gov Youngkin is doing nothing.

The future is always hard to predict. I do believe that the Washington area is already in a recession and it will probably get worse. That said, many sectors and businesses are going to be making big money in the current environment.

I wouldn’t burst their bubble because

1. You don’t know if it’s a bubble and when it will burst (there are a lot of viewpoints on this)

2. Will they believe you or will they think you’re one if the naysayers?

You can mention what you think about the economy and what you believe will be the potential impact on your company and leave it at that.

Stay quiet -- no one can predict the future
