If his family doesn't know you, wait for the online obituary to come. If he has any charities you would agree with, send $25. Or write a note on the online obit.

I think realizing that someone you respect and generally like also has different thoughts than you about other things isn’t a bad thing. Recognize where you did align and focus on that.
