SRTS programs encourage physical activity, improve community safety by reducing traffic congestion, and benefit the environment.

First thing they need to change the ridiculous 2 mile walking distance policy for high school. No kids will walk 2 miles to school each way safely.

I gave up and drive my kid now. Too many unsafe cross walks, and little interest in doing anything about it no matter how many kids get hurt.

The next few weeks are the deadliest time for pedestrians and cyclists as the days get shorter and DST ends.

Audit your own child's walk to school. Are there sidewalks the entire way? If so, are they adequately separated from the road? Are they in good condition? Is foliage trimmed? Where does your child have to cross? Are they crossing major roads? Is there a marked crosswalk? Is it signaled? Do you have a crossing guard? Once your child gets to school property by foot or on bike, are they protected until they get to the front door, or are they having to dodge buses and drop-off lane drivers?

Do the same for the walk to the bus stop and the bus stop location.

Multiple students have died or been severely injured at or on their way to/from a bus stop. Two elementary school children died, and a WJ student was traumatically injured. A few years ago, three Kennedy HS students were struck at a bus stop along Georgia Ave and one was traumatically injured.

Send your findings to MCPS Transportation, the BOE, and to the County Council's Transportation & Environment Committee.

I feel like the walk to our bus stop is not the safest. I tried calling the bus depot to see if it could be moved just a few feet and was met was scorn.

There are many walking routes in Montgomery county that needs to be addressed.
