If it is pre-emergent, then put it down in early February. Too early or too late and it will not work very well.

My grass seed has zero filler. Zero. No coating. Nothing except seed.

Do not combine grass seed and fertilizer at the same time. Spot grass seed should be fine.

If you’re looking to improve the look
And health of your lawn then starting with fertilizer and fall weed feed is a great start.

Do it again in late winter and early Spring.

The following year…I prefer to let the real
Magic happen between fall and spring because that’s when your grass is the most healthy.

Very late summer or early Fall. Dethatch and rake up. Put a light helping of milorganite down and Maybe put down some Spectracide concentrate spray in a light vs liberal application to kill anything lurking. Monitor to ensure grass still healthy as dethatching can take its toll.

Wait two weeks

Double or triple pass core aeration followed by overseed.

Make sure you have two or three Weeks before long freeze or frost cycles.


I’m a huge fan of Scott’s because it’s easy and works and is way cheaper than a service. Everything you buy has filler, it’s just a question of how much. That being said I tend to apply a fall weed and feed or winter guard in December and again in February combined with a pre emergent. This yields phenomenal results if you get a wet winter as it soaks in well.

I do another Scott’s round in may or June with milorganite one or two times during the summer. And, spectracide as necessary.

I have the best lawn in a neighborhood of 200 half acre+ lots, starting from weeds. Countless neighbors have asked if I could do similar to theirs but I don’t have the time. Golf course level striping.

If you were going to apply a weed killer, early August would have been best. They can deter new grass seedlings. I would hold off on working on weeds until spring.

This time of year is ideal for planting new grass. I would agitate soil and apply: quality grass seed (sun and shade mix), fertilizer and top soil (at least to bare spots). Keep lawn moist until new grass is about 4 inches tall. Then water deeply twice a week.

If you are near a local nursery, they can guide you and provide good products.

I put down grass seed last weekend by hand in bare spots. It was not the coated grass seed junk; I only use pure fescue grass seed. I got it at a local independent hw store.

In early February, I will put down no-brand pre-emergent lawn treatment. This gets rid of most lawn weeds by preventing their seed from sprouting. Fertilizer also is helpful, maybe in late February.

I never use Scott's for anything on my lawn. Too much inert filler in their lawn stuff means it is a bad value. One pays more for all their advertising.

My lawn is pretty weedy in parts, some parts are shady and some are sunny, and I'm not in a position to hire a lawn company to fix it. I do have one of those Scott's spreaders. Is there some kind of product - Like Scott's Turfbuilder Weed & Feed for winter that would be helpful?

Should I also put down grass seed in those spots that are very bare (now that I've pulled the crabgrass?)
