Sewing labor costs the same for both coats. The wool is a small fraction of the extra cost.

I have seen that things do cost more for plus size than regular size though. I’d assume XXL is plus sized?

As a petite girl, I’m just used to it by now. Dh begs me to go to the all you can eat sushi buffet and they definitely make a lot of money off me. I really can only eat one roll. Dh ate 5 rolls while we were there. Same for planes since I weigh 110 and a lot of people weigh double but cost the same. Airlines do spend a lot more on fuel when planes weigh more.

Alternatively, one could deduce that difference in the amount of material and labor to manufacture the garment is such a small part of the overall price, it isn't worth the effort.

We would also have peoples squeezing into smaller sizes.

Cost of materials is literally 2% of retail price. It doesn’t matter XL used 1.996% vs XLL used 2.08%.
What matters is that customers keep coming back next season.

Np, and I agree with this, and assumed it was obvious that plus-size/tall clothing costs more because it takes more material to make it. Similar to the larger pizza, it requires more ingredients.

I’ve seen lingerie that was more expensive for the larger cup sizes (Victoria’s Secret).

Clothing costs are arbitrary, as about 70% of the cost is markup for the retail store.

Can they really "make do" if they can't get the small coat on? I understand more fabric costs more, but it's still penalizing a tall person by charging more.

Economies of scale and cost averaging.

Given the few people who are extra large or extra small, making those costs more. It isn’t just size and amount of material, it is changing the pattern, cutting dies and assembly cadence. It isn’t just the amount of material. So they cost average among all sizes. It would be cheaper if they just used the same size. Anyone who falls outside that one size could just make do.
