I have an older Rick Steves like this that works well for the kind of packing you prefer. Since the top is floppy, it can't fully protect a breakable item (like a figurine tucked into sweaters). But it's served me well for over 20 years.


If there’s no hard sided option I would get a soft sided again. I am just making sure I’m not missing something!

I've never seen one that isn't a clamshell style. That's one of the reasons I prefer soft-sided bags.

Most hard sided carry ons I’ve seen (and the current one I own) have 2 shallow sides. My much older soft sided one was deep with the other side as the cover.

Do they make hard sided ones that are “deep”?

It just works better for the way I like to pack.
