We understand that these are popular clubs that usually have a lot of people trying out. The first two I heard are harder to make due to the small turnover.
I've been looking for lesser known club but they are either not in our area (Tenley, DC). Or, have gotten bad reviews. What are some lesser know clubs they you are all trying out for? Want to go somewhere where my daughter has more of a chance to make the team.

If you plan to try out for MOCO, you should sign up for their club prep sessions:

Or not. Trying out for MOCO as a beginner 9th grader is a waste of time and money. This player will likely spend the whole tryout on the 3rd court with nobody watching her.

Unless they play setter or middle. Then they might get a second look.

Another lesser known or new club

Spiked DC is not a new club. It's been around for at least 6 years. And it's expensive while also not being a great club.

From Tenleytown, MOCO, Academy, and Metro Central are the best options logistically. We are in NW DC and were able to make MOJO in McLean work a few years back.

Also, it looks like Bethesda Volleyball Club is planning a team that competes locally but is something less than the commitment of most clubs. https://bethesdavolleyball.com/faqs

It depends a lot how you define "pretty good" - if you compare them with DMV or Academy, they are pretty good for this age level. If you compare them with MOCO, they are between MOCO2 and MOCO3. If you compare them with Platform, they are between PVC1 and PVC2.

The OP lives in DC, so MDJrs and XPerience / Stars are too far. I would not recommend DMV Academy without saying that you need to pay a lot to play with everyone who could not make a good team / club.

MEVC has a 2s team that is good for beginners. There is also ECE volleyball club, RVA, and Academy, I don’t think the regional Metro teams are hard to get into. We are not trying out for any of these as my DD hopes to get a returning spot at her current club but she knows people that have played at of all of these clubs.

There is some (imperfect) correlation between the club quality and how popular they are. You seem to be aware that it is not easy to make a team in a popular club. You should also be aware that you may get less quality in a less popular club. You may also have two families who have opposite experience in the same club for kids on the same team. So take everything you read here with a grain of salt.

I will assume that your DD has little to no club experience and that's the reason why you are looking at lesser known clubs. If that's the case, I feel like the MOCO and Metro tryouts are a waste of time. You can think of Platform 14 as a safe club - consider yourself lucky if you make their #1 team, but you will likely be offered a spot on their #2 or #3 team. Your overall experience will depend a lot on who will be coaching and how many players they take on the rosters. Last season they loaded the rosters too much and some parents will not return because their kids were benched in most tournaments (or got minimal court time).

Closer to you may be Rockville Volleyball Association (RVA), but this is a club that travels for the sake of travelling. They could find plenty of local tournaments, but they prefer to play in neighboring states instead. This might be a good combination of a lesser known club with a decent chance for a beginner to make a team (if you don't mind the travel).
