She did well academically and socially at MacArthur but wanted to have a few more extracurricular options. If she decides she doesn’t like Walls, we’d have no reservations about having her transfer back to MacArthur.
1. Do they have all grade fun field trips? Yes, they have a beach day and they planned to go to King’s Dominion. It had to be rescheduled due to an issue with the charter buses.
2. Are they planning on adding more sports? Yes, but they need more parent support to do so.
3. What clubs do they have? (See website)
4. How are students getting prepared for college (how is the school preparing the kids for college?) The teachers are really encouraging to students and there are a lot of AP offerings. If our kid stayed at MacArthur, they would have taken 3 APs plus personal finance, African American Lit and Spanish 2.
They were disappointed that at Walls, they only were assigned 1 AP class and that the other offerings were more “general”.
5. Are there any spirit weeks or other fun activities? Yes, they have Color Week, PJ day, International day, a Winter and a Spring Dance, etc…
6. What is lunch and recess like and how long is it? They have a nice cafeteria where all of the students has lunch together last year. Kids can also opt to eat in teachers’ classrooms if they have office hours or they can eat in the library. Our kid said that the cafeteria food was ok most days.
7. She heard from friends that there were a lot of people vaping in classes. How is that being controlled? Not going to lie, that is a real thing in some classes. The teachers take the vapes if they see them.
8. What's the overall vibe of the school? (are the teachers nice, principal and Assistant Principal?) The school admin is very communicative. The teachers are very accessible and genuinely seem to like their jobs. PTA is welcoming. Kids: It’s a much more diverse school, socioeconomically and culturally, than Walls. It’s also filled with teenagers so sometimes the kids can be rowdy but nothing like some of the other DCPS HS.
School: I think the facilities are nicer and newer than Walls. Having windows that look out onto nature in all of the classrooms makes a big difference.
9. Is it similar to Hardy Middle School? ( That was her middle school) Can’t speak to that as our kid went to a charter middle school.
Hope this helps and good luck to your daughter-

If she went to Hardy, you must know people there now. That would be a much better source of information than DCUM.
yeah they have fun field trip. Her friends (at other schools) went to places like terrapin adventures and other team building activities.

1. Do they have all grade fun field trips? Ummm idk about field trips yet but there will be a trip to Spain in the Spring.
2. Are they planning on adding more sports? There’s already track, football, volleyball, golf swimming.
3. What clubs do they have? Idk all the clubs but my son has joined the anime club and the dungeons land dragons
4. How are students getting prepared for college (how is the school preparing the kids for college?) my son is only in 9th grade but I see that 11-12th graders are already touring colleges
5. Are there any spirit weeks or other fun activities? Yes it’s in October
6. What is lunch and recess like and how long is it? It’s like a normal school 😂
7. She heard from friends that there were a lot of people vaping in classes. How is that being controlled? It’s not the kids cape after school or before school just stay away from it.
8. What's the overall vibe of the school? (are the teachers nice, principal and Assistant Principal?) my vibe has been amazing very responsive and diligent
