Is it a weakness not to be as good when they are playing on a crowded field, or no big deal? It seems like some kids are the other way around… good in the small space but less so on the bigger field. He is new to this team so really not sure what the coach thinks of him yet. They spend a lot of practice time in a small area due to limited space, so seems like a lot of evaluation could be based on that.

Don't worry, if he is new to the team, it will take about a month to feel secure enough to fit in. Working in a small space makes his game sharper and quicker. This will help on game day on the big field. Most new players go through an adjustment period, he will be fine. By next spring, he will be a much better player for it as playing in a small space if very difficult. When he feels better, he will make runs and challenges into the middle. For now, he's improving just by being on the outside figuring out how to fit in, receive the passes and where to quickly pass to a teammate. A lot of evaluation is based on how they perform at practice, but it takes a long time to raise the level to play well in a small area.

It will hurt him in tryouts, but it has almost no connection to the actual game of soccer. I hate watching tryouts on a tiny field.
