My 6th grader's FCPS elementary school had a volleyball "tryout" or something on Monday. We only got a one-pager with a permission slip attached, so details are a bit lacking at this point. However, some recent updates in the Pickup Patrol app seem to indicate that DD will have some practices and games (opponents unknown) from October through March.

I'll share more details as I get receive them.

I googled this because last year, my kids FCPS middle school didn’t have volleyball. It looks like some schools do have it. I don’t know if it’s competitive.

But at HS, there were club players cut from the freshman team at their school. Some schools are like this, others you can make JV with any experience.

Even if there are MS tryouts, you always have rec if it doesn’t work out.

Current 6th grader who plays but not looking to spend thousands on private club, so just curious and looking ahead.

It is getting harder and harder to make a varsity team without club experience. Since volleyball is a pretty expensive sport (especially in Virginia), it should be easier to make a high school team in less affluential areas. It is mission impossible to make the varsity team at our high school without club experience: a lot of players from top clubs are turned down. You can go to some high school games and talk to the parents to figure out what their experience was.
