My straight A sophomore only uses social media for a very specific interest that she pursues and to follow school activities she is involved in. She does text her friends and chats with them on the phone, however, I honestly think talking to friends on the phone is seriously the most normal thing kids these days can do. We did not allow a tablet when she was little, however, she was certainly allowed to watch shows and movies on an actual television.

Straight A student has unlimited amounts of screen time. Never been an issue. Phone is turned in at 8pm every night.

All As 8th grade parents here. No iPad during the week at all. Phone (texting, music/no games or YouTube) ok in the evenings until 9, then the phone sleeps in the kitchen.

Last week the school play cast list was posted at 10 pm. DC had almost 600 texts in the theater kids group chat by 6:30 the next morning. I was flabbergasted.

Our all A’s DD uses most of her screen time for a non profit they set up last year. Not sure if they have time for frivolity.

I don’t cut off my 15 yo daughter. A lot of screen time but she’s on a HS sports team and plays a club sport the rest of the year. Her grades are good and she’s often exhausted from sports so that’s her downtime. She often tells us to be quiet in the house so she can go to sleep, so I don’t worry about her getting off the electronics for bed.

We use to monitor in middle school but no longer. Our high schooler leaves her phone downstairs on her own accord while doing homework. She takes it back at night but it hasn’t been an issue. Self-motivated.

I have an 8th grader who has always been good at self-monitoring, but sometimes he spends a few hours, usually on chess. No social media and phone shuts off at 9 but no limits outside of that. He loves to read so that takes up a lot of his time.

My straight A HS senior has too much (imo) but not unlimited. Social media like IG and snap have set amounts each day (45 min for IG and 20 for snap which she doesn’t use as much) and phones are downstairs by 9:30p every night.

She’s also good at time management and gets work done in school so she doesn’t have to do as much late at night after practices

I have one that is super disciplined and great at self monitoring. One that isn’t and I have to constantly check in and make sure work is getting done. Both get As but my one that needs more monitoring and time management help has As that are “just barely” As, around 93%, as the other kid is more like 99%

^ one of them monitors well, the other has pretty severe ADHD and doesn't. But he's older, and I don't get to control his life.

A lot. The first reason I let them is that before I allowed screens, they were bookworms, and they still read for pleasure; and the second reason is that they don't just watch mindless shorts. Many channels they watch on Youtube are phenomenal (Kurzgesacht, Overly Sarcastic Productions, various crafters who are expert in what they do) and they've learned a lot.

My kid was a straight a student seven and eight grade. In 9th now. He historically had pretty liberal screen time, but sports and school is keeping him to almost no screen time m-f. He do monitor and turn off the internet at certain times.
