Sounds pretty strong for RM IB. Many others just have a higher MAP R without any extracurricular achievement related to humanity subjects

Yes, but the difference it makes is unknown.

I'm wondering if it hurts students (which I think would be illegal, but who knows with the state of the world now). I could see RMIB and other competitive programs not wanting to have to provide accommodations and services.

Think about how RMIB will impact college admissions, if that’s something you care about. IB is a ton of work in a highly competitive magnet program. AP gives a hard-working bright kid a lot of early impressive scores and lots of college credit at many schools ($$$). Think about whether his college application might be better from your home school. There may also be questions re whether these programs all stay the next five years.

It's absolutely in range.

PPs are just projecting their insecurity. RMIB is a crapshoot because there's not really a way to distinguish between applicants based on academic ability, now that most students don't have access to gifted&talented middle school programs and over 25% of students get As.

For certain demographics and certain gender, right this is far from high enough. It’s good to try, and even the result is not positive, it’s a good life lesson for a high schooler to start to learn the cruelty of the real world. His package is pretty good for an 8th grader, and should be able to on the track for decent college offers no matter which program he gets in or not.

The scores are within range.

If your kid ends up on the WL, stay on it until school starts. A lot of movement near the beginning of the new school year

To OP: you might have shared too much information that might expose your son's privacy....

I can say something from a parent of a Chinese boy perspective: your son's profile might fit RMIB better than Blair SMCS, but nothing to guarantee acceptance. RMIB might be a better fit as most RMIB students are well-rounded with a few spikes (e.g., swimming, and RM is closer to RMSC), while kids in Blair in general favor much more for STEM courses over ELA. It's harder for your son to stand out at Blair given his MAP-M score and lack of STEM competition experience. Robotics is very time consuming, so it's very hard for him to keep dedicating equal amount of time to both swimming and robotics. Both programs have a few students go with the sports recruiting path every year. They are not stellar in academic competitions but maintain good GPAs and well-rounded course selections.
