If you still menstruate, you can become pregnant. Consider using some form of protection if you don't want to become pregnant. The likelihood of having a viable pregnancy is slim at this age, but do you want to have miscarriages? The hormones during peri are crazy! Use some type of birth control method.

I started having heavy periods and huge clots at about 45 with periods very regular or sometimes off by a day or two until 49 when they started to gave longer intervals. So, what you're describing sounds like how the start of peri was for me.

I'm so sorry. You could always take a pregnancy test just to see if your hormones are elevated (you are no longer pregnant if you were, but your hormones might not know that yet)

IUDs can sometimes trigger bleeding by themselves, without peri. My mother had that side-effect.

I had an IUD for 2 decades before without this issue. Even the same IUD for several years. Not the IUD.

I see. Thanks for clarifying.

Happened to me and my mom during peri. Awful bleeding, like hemorrhaging. I started on bcp to stop the flow. Ugh, I know it stinks.

Thanks everyone. OP here. The math from a conception point of view checks out. But then it's been checking out for years and no baby... so I didn't think it possible there might have been an embryo in there. Which has left, apparently. Or, it's as PPs said: a weirdly heavy period.

20:04, what did the GYN find? Was it fibroids?

I’ve had light and regular periods my whole like. Then around 47 or 48, everything went bonkers. Irregular and very heavy bleeding then a light cycle, then another period two weeks later etc. suggest checking in with your GYN to rule out fibroids or something more serious, but this very likely could be peri related. That said, you may also want to do the math if you think pregnancy (miscarriage) is remotely possible from a timeframe perspective. I have a number of friends who had surprise pregnancies at your age despite being told they had zero chance of conceiving on their own and/or had significant prior interventions to conceive.

I've never had this except when having a first trimester miscarriage.

Is this a very early miscarriage or does this happen in perimenopause?

My sister has described something similar to what you described as she was going thru peri/menopause. I’m still in beginning stages, missing a period once in awhile. But they are a lot more painful than when I was regular and not in peri.

Why would you risk pregnancy? I mean, come on.
