Of course. This is part of the reason we and DC choose a school not too far away.

It’s not a character flaw to miss your family and want to see them. Even at 18.

Our freshman is a six hour drive away and their fall break is only a long weekend. They won’t be coming home. They will be home for the long T-giving break.

In college, I was six hundred miles from home and only came home for Christmas break because I had extended family close to my school who I could stay with and that was cheaper than traveling.

Our sophomore didn't last year and isn't planning to this year either. It's just two extra days off, which hardly makes it worth. Besides, DC says they're having too much fun.

I think it is kind of nice to come back. It's like when you come back you relax but when you go back to school, you realize how much more comfortable it is than when you started. It's like going away made you realize it is the new home.

My kid came home every semester break except for senior year.

Mine have not come home before T-giving but they are both 350+ miles away. They wanted to use the time for friends and studying / research.

Yes, I always schedule doctor's appointments for fall break that didn't happen over summer.

Yes, my daughter and all her friends are coming home, even those a flight away. Back when I was in college they told us that fall break is purposely scheduled 6 weeks after freshman move in as sort of a milestone. “You made it six weeks now you can take a short break” kind of thing.

Both kids about four hours drive away for college. First kid (just graduated) never came home, always had some kind of an outing/trip planned. Second kid ( current freshman) is coming home because really wants to see girlfriend and other friends who are around.

Absolutely yes. Mine have been home already, for a short weekend, but looking forward to the longer break in a few weeks.

It's just a long weekend at my kid's school and we're a (short) plane flight away. Instead of her coming home, her grandparents are visiting her. She's looking forward to the chance to show off her new city.

Well my kid is a 6 hour drive away and he came home for fall break his first year. He didn’t come home second year but is planning to do so this year.

Assuming they live a short/moderate distance away.

My daughter is less than 200 miles away, and is very excited to come home and sleep in her own bed for a few nights and see her dog.

She’s been adjusting ok (made friends but homesick, nothing concerning though). Part of me wonders if just staying put would help her adjust better.

Is this a “normal” time for kids to make their first trip back home, provided the distance isn’t prohibitive?
