My sweet blue collar parents took on debt for me, I had a small loan, and I did have a partial scholarship that was allocated to NC students.
But this is awesome!
It really isn't. Would it kill these kids to take out a small loan like you did? And/or get a job?
I’m the PP. I had a loan and jobs - I just wish my parents hadn’t taken on a chunk of debt. I’m fine with my portion and think yes it’s fine. But hate students or their parents being crippled or majorly impacted by debt. My parents were very kind about it. And could only do it bc they lived so modestly and my sibling went to a state school and was an RA, so housing costs were covered. And it was a lot less $$$$ then than now.

So in the past few days Wake, Tufts, and Emory have all announced similar programs (I'm sure I'm missing others). There is probably a decent amount of overlap in applicants.
Meanwhile the donut holers get more and more depressed as they continue to get squeezed. No one is taking up a collection for them but they have historically been the backbone of so many of these schools. Now no one cares.
Go to a state school if you’re penny pinching.
